Reflections on the episcopate

 My friend Jared Cramer has posted a characteristically thoughtful essay on what we Episcopalians should, and should not, be looking for in our bishops. I hope to engage with it on this blog before too long, but in the meantime, I encourage you to read it.

I posted the skeleton of a syllabus yesterday (the deadline to do so, though what the penalty is, or even could be, for failure to meet the deadline is not at all obvious). I do not believe in this syllabus. It's pretty close to my syllabus from the last time I taught the class, and that went pretty well, so maybe I should have more confidence this time. But I have a sinking feeling that I have not remotely accommodated the differences between last time and this time. Weekly update 2

From an early MS of Anselm's last work,  De concordia I'm about a thousand words ahead of my goal, which is fantastic, because next week I'm attending a virtual conference and will be pressed for time to get writing done. In addition to having over two-thirds of Chapter 3 written, I have some of the Further Reading section drafted. I'm also making the list of illustrations. The book doesn't really need much in the way of illustrations, and the press has told me not to add illustrations just for the sake of having them, but a few of them might add some interest. Certainly there should be an illustration from a manuscript, like the one above. (Too bad they'll all be in black and white.) A map of the key places would be helpful. Right now I just have an instruction for them to find or produce a map that includes all the places mentioned in Chapter 1. Since I have yet to write Chapter 1, this directive will need a bit of tweaking before I submit the list on July 15....

If I had all the time in the world

Statue of Reginald Somerset Ward at Guildford Cathedral If I had all the time in the world -- or, more aptly, if I had exactly as much time as I in fact have, but made better use of it -- I would start a couple of podcasts.     One would be Noonday Prayer for each of the days of Lent (thus, not Sundays). It would be the full BCP service with a spoken meditation -- some poetry or poetic prose -- at the appropriate place. Ten minutes, tops, for people to use as a devotional during the day. Lent will be here very soon, but I may actually manage that one. I'll know more within a week or so. Watch this space (and the Cathedral website, and possibly the diocesan newsletter . . .). I've been wanting to do the Noonday Prayer podcast for a couple of years now. The other idea came to me when I was last in Scotland. I encountered the spiritual writings of Reginald Somerset Ward.
